The All-New Focus Paralane: There is No Bad Weather
Friday 10 June 2016 Filed in: General
The newly announced Focus Paralane represents so much more than just another Endurance based road bike...
The design brief that the Stuttgart based design and development team started with was not just to create a standard endurance based road bike but to create a bike that could be used in all conditions and over a wider variety of surfaces.
Focus started by analysing the positions of a wide range of riders in order to fine tune the geometry to the needs of sportive and enthusiast riders resulting in a taller front and shorter reach before moving onto optimizing the frame for comfort and compliance. This was achieved through hours of finite element analysis to identify areas of the frame tubing that could be optimized along with differing carbon lay-ups. This has resulted in a 20% improvement in comfort compared to the Izalco Max (a frame already noted for its superb comfort!) but without any significant loss of stiffness. Other highlights on the frame include disc brakes throughout the range and the patented and brilliantly simple to use Rapid Axle Technology (R.A.T) used for bolt thru front and rear wheels. This improves the stiffness of the bike for a direct steering feel and also garuantees wheel alignment.
The Focus team then looked at how the bike might be used and in what conditions leading them to develop a super-neat integrated mudguard design that leaves no hint of it's all-weather credentials when left off the bike. Even better is that every bike will ship with mudguards meaning that it is not an optional extra that would require the rider to put their hand in their pocket again. We like their thinking!
All-road versatility was next on the agenda with Focus making sure to allow for 35mm of tyre clearance (or 28mm when used with mudguards). This means that the Paralane is the perfect companion for when the roads are in less than perfect condition as so many of them are in the UK but also when the temptation of that dirt track or bridleway through the forest is too much to resist!
